-The most common fear around women and resistance training is that they will get bulky from picking up weights.

-True- following a proper strength training programme will increase lean muscle mass.

-Spoiler alert- it will take A LOT of conscious effort to accumulate whatever someone’s perceived idea of ‘bulky’ is.

-It will obviously depend on the individual’s profile. Everyone has a preference of how they want to look and feel in their body and that’s OK! If you are a newbie and you get those newbie gains and fear that you’re getting too ’bulky’ then guess what you can dial back on that progressive overload and get to a happy maintenance.

-The benefits of strength training are huge and will give a longevity to your body that hours upon hours of pounding cardio will not (yes I run A LOT and I’m very happy to make and accept that statement.)

So next time you fear picking up a pair of dumbbells lets look at the benefits:

  • Increases metabolism
  • Helps prevent osteoporosis
  • Increases insulin sensitivity
  • Increases strength, power, endurance, recovery
  • Increases bone density
  • Helps slow down the process of age related issues
  • AND let’s face it- MAKES US FEEL EMPOWERED!!!
